ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) marked its 25th anniversary by launching Pakistan’s first fully digital identity card. This innovative move eliminates the need for citizens to carry physical ID cards, integrating the national identity document into the Pak ID mobile application.
A formal ceremony was held at NADRA’s headquarters to commemorate the milestone, attended by key officials and dignitaries. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended congratulatory messages, praising NADRA's contributions to identity management and national database integration. To mark the occasion, the State Bank of Pakistan issued a commemorative coin, while Pakistan Post introduced a special postage stamp.
Under the World Bank-backed Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP), digital verification systems will soon be introduced to streamline authentication processes. A pilot phase for the fully digital ID is scheduled to launch on August 14, 2025.
President Zardari acknowledged Nadra’s efforts in strengthening the state-citizen relationship and urged the authority to harness emerging technologies for improved efficiency and public service. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Nadra’s global recognition in managing one of the largest demographic databases and emphasized the role of digital solutions in economic growth and inclusivity.
Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi applauded the digital ID initiative, noting Nadra’s extensive reach in providing identity services nationwide and to overseas Pakistanis. He also underscored its contributions to national security and governance.
The ceremony’s chief guest, Nadra’s founding chairman, retired Maj Gen Zahid Ehsan, reflected on the authority’s early days and rapid advancements. Other past chairmen, board members, and senior officials were also present.
The event featured the launch of a documentary film and a book detailing Nadra’s 25-year journey, highlighting its evolution and achievements in digital identity management.
